Vermont Teddy Bear began in 1981, when founder John Sortino sold bears he made by hand from a cart on Burlington's Church Street — the very first was Bearcho. That one bear grew into a company that has sent millions of handmade teddy bears and stuffed animals around the world, each backed by a lifetime guarantee and a Bear Hospital that mends well-loved ones. Today its factory on Shelburne Road is a local landmark, with daily tours, a Design Studio for building your own plush companion, and a Bear Store of classic, special-edition, and giant bears. They come to the market to celebrate Shelburne and their connection to this community, and to share a bit of what they make just up the road.
